Building a Bridge for the Transportation Gap
Since the early 1990s planning studies have been undertaken to review the transportation corridor in Durham Region. The conclusion: a new east-west transit corridor was needed. Recommendations outlined that a new corridor extend to Highway 35/115 adjoining the existing Highway 407.
Additional north-south links to Highway 401 were also recommended.
This new transportation corridor will bridge the transportation gap and support the objectives of the provincial Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH). This will provide for the efficient movement of people and goods within the study area. The completion of the first phase is a success.
Bridge Completion for Phase 1
BURNCO has now completed the bridge construction for the first phase (shown above in orange) of the east-west transit corridor. The Highway 407 extension in the Greater Toronto area - from Brock Road in Pickering to Harmony Road in Oshawa - adds a distance of 22 kilometers. Highway 412, a new highway, now also connects Highway 407 to Highway 401, with a 10 kilometer north-south route, also open to traffic.
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the Highway 407 extension (shown above in purple) will operate from Harmony Road to Taunton Road, and will be open to traffic in late 2017. The final phase (shown above in blue) will include a further extension from Taunton Road to Highway 35/115. In addition, a new series 400 highway (Highway 418) will likely open to traffic in late 2019 adding a link between Highway 401 and Highway 407.
